Take a look at the I.N.V.E.S.T.O.R.™ acronym Monroe created. When you look at investing in this way, it's pretty logical. Wherever you can imagine to put your money to get some form of return, it will fit into one of these eight categories. For example, all forms of saving (including precious metals) go into the Never Touch Funds category. Any type of risky investments or direct investments into business is considered venture capital. Artwork or an invention would fall in the IP category. The list goes on.

Often, when you're working with a financial advisor, they either don't know enough about each of these various investment classes, or their commission is contingent on you buying something particular they are selling. The I.N.V.E.S.T.O.R. model by necessity implies that you should be considering every possible investment. He's a real estate investor and co-founder of the real estate investment firm Windermere Lodge, LLC, owning multiple rental properties in South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida. Yup. From I to R:

  • I - Intellectual Property/Insurance: He makes passive income every year from books he's written, films he's made, and music he's created. He also has adequate life and other insurance.
  • N - Never Touch Fund: He has multiple savings accounts, and enough saved up to keep him going for 6 months or more without any income. He also owns physical gold, platinum, palladium, and silver--all stored in a safe place away from his home.
  • V - Venture Capital: He regularly invests a portion of his money into risky alternative investments and into companies with unproven track records in order to benefit from potentially higher returns.
  • E - Education: He has more formal education than perhaps anyone, and outside of that, he is a voracious reader, regularly takes classes and seminars, and is constantly trying to learn more.
  • S - Stock Market: He is extensively invested in the stock market, and is an avid crypto trader.

  • O - Own Business: He owns multiple businesses of his own including a law practice, a real estate investment company, a private investigation agency, a book publishing business, a global personal growth community, and a financial management firm.

None. Nada. Zero. Zilch. When he does use a credit card, it's either paid off within 30 days, or the balance is always kept below $1000. But they are always there in case of an emergency.

It varies between 790 and 820, depending on which reporting agency. It's really high.

According to the IRS, apparently the average millionaire in America has gone bankrupt or out of business at least 3 times before making his/her first million. To that end, Monroe isn't afraid to admit that he has had many business failures in his life, and even declared bankruptcy once in 2004 prior to deploying to Iraq with the Army. When he returned, he vowed to never again be in that situation again. It began with a Masters of Entrepreneurship, then an MBA in finance, and then a certificate in financial planning from Boston University's Boston Institute of Finance. Lots of reading too. Lots and lots of reading. The end result: he's in better financial shape now than most Americans who have never declared bankruptcy. Some say his bankruptcy is a black mark, but others consider it a mark of a champion. How so? His bankruptcy is not a mark of failure, but instead, a mark of trying. Of putting himself into the ring. Most importantly, it marked the day when he vowed to become a master of financial planning, financial management, and investments.
